This is a technique also known as cornering. It is used to keep the most of your body behind cover in result you have sight of the enemy before he can have a clear shot at you.

Let me explain this quickly. The gun in shooter games is almost at the middle of the screen and the character is always right handed.

On the last position before you totally expose yourself. The enemy shoulder is exposed before you actually face the enemy. Half of the reticule should be hidden by the wall leaving only the red dot and other half exposed the enemy should spot your gun muzzle only and maybe a bit of the left hand holding the front end of the gun giving you the tactical advantage and take that first shot at the enemy.
